About this course

  • What is the SEA Model?

The SEA Model is the search engine evaluator course for Google raters. It’s tailored to applicants who are preparing for the qualification test at Leapforce / Appen or Lionbridge and also evaluators who are looking to improve their performance and rating skills at work. It's also suitable for SEOs and marketers looking for a competitive edge by learning more about search evaluation and applying this knowledge in their content and optimization strategies.

  • How is it different from Google's general guidelines?

Google’s General Guidelines on search quality rating consist of a PDF document with 150+ pages. To work as a search engine evaluator for Google, you must read and understand those guidelines. It’s official, mandatory and made available for free. The SEA Model is an online course that was designed to be used as a supplementary resource to the general guidelines. It’s not mandatory and it's paid. The SEA Model is innovative both in terms of methodology and content. It organizes all aspects that should be considered when performing search evaluation in a systematic, didactic and entertaining way.

  • Is it easier than Google's guidelines?

Probably not. You should think of it more as an alternative, advanced version of the guidelines. What you will find in the SEA Model took me years of hard work to put together. It’s those kinds of things that separate top raters from average raters. Experienced raters from newbies. It’s funny that when you first read the guidelines, you will probably find it complex and after a couple of weeks on the job, you will probably find it vague. One of my challenges with this project was to create something more meticulous than the guidelines, but that wouldn’t feel very complex. Independently on whether you find it easy or not, you can rest assured that the tips, tricks and techniques you will learn in this course will substantially improve your repertoire as a rater. If that will make you get to the top 10%, top 20%? Time will tell, but it will definitely help!

  • Does the SEA Model work for Bing's rating project?

Nope. The SEA Model is tailored only to participants, enthusiasts and applicants for Google’s search quality rating project.

  • Why some of the terminology used in the SEA Model is different from the terminology used on Google's guidelines?

Just as important as understanding what this course is, is understanding what it is not. The SEA Model is not a video lesson version of Google's guidelines. It wouldn’t be anywhere near as valuable if it was. Everything in this model was thought so that it makes sense on its own and in a way that facilitates the use of mnemonics, which are techniques to help the brain retain and recall important information. So, for example, you will notice that the rating labels used in the model are Bad, Below Average, Medium, Strong and Strongest, while the labels used in the general guidelines are Fails to Meet, Slightly Meets, Moderately Meets, Highly Meets and Fully Meets. It doesn’t matter! Google may change these labels tomorrow and everything will still work the same.

What makes the SEA Model special

Instructor's note

The SEA Model works. I tested it against hundreds of queries and results, and it works. These techniques helped me to consistently rank in the top 5% and top 10% during my time as a Google rater.

To make the most of this course, there are a couple of Do’s and Don’ts that I’d like to share with you. Following my advice here will make the difference to your satisfaction and success with the course, so please read carefully.

Don’t:

Don’t rush into getting to the final rating

The SEA Model is a methodology that will teach you an innovative perspective on how to approach search and relevance.

The model is designed to help learners develop what I call the search evaluator’s mindset, which can be defined as a set of skills to master search evaluation.

In the first half of the course, you will learn the fundamentals that will serve as the basis for the evaluation analysis. Don't worry about getting to the final rating at this point.

You can be sure that by the end of the course, you will know how to come up with an exact rating for any given search result. One step at a time. No need to rush.

Don’t assume it’s easy

Search evaluation is not easy, and this is why most people fail the qualification exam and many raters are dismissed for poor performance.

There are many aspects that must be considered in the evaluation process, and one of the objectives of this course is to organize all these aspects into a systematic process.

If you assume it’s easy, you may think that the course is unnecessarily meticulous, which is not the case.

Don’t assume it’s hard

Search evaluation is not hard either. Once you get the hang of the process, you will notice that it becomes much easier, more fluid and almost automatic over time.

If you assume it’s hard, you may think you will never be able to nail it, which is not true.

Don’t use the model as a substitute for the guidelines

This course is not intended to substitute the need of following Google’s General Guidelines. The strength of the model lies in its capacity to complement the guidelines, not to replace them.

My advice is that you stick to the model’s attributes and features whenever the guidelines are vague for the results that you are evaluating. This is how I was able to consistently rank in the top 5% and top 10% of raters for many months in a row.

To guide and speed up the rating process, you can apply the Diamond Rating Steps on every rating task.

Do:

Send me rating questions

If something about the course content is not clear to you, let me know.

Although I won’t be answering rating questions individually, I will include a Q&A section with the best questions at the end of the chapter that they refer to.

Feel free to structure your question as you find appropriate. In some cases, it may be helpful to inform a 'query' and a 'result' to illustrate your concern.

All rating questions must be formulated and will be answered based on the SEA Model.

Send me feedback and let me know if it worked for you

Do you have suggestions on how to improve the course? Did it help you pass Leapforce/Lionbridge exam? Did you improve your score on the quality reviews? Let me know!

Your feedback is very important and appreciated to help me improve this material.
